A Class 2 license allows you to drive a vehicle up to 18,000kgs or a vehicle with two axles.

Overview

The course fee includes theory training, learner licence fees and a driver training practical assessment.

This course includes a logbook unit standard (unless you can prove you have sat it with an NZTA approved provider within the last twelve months) and the Class 2 unit standard (17574), which consists of both theory and practical.

If you already hold your Class 2 learner’s licence (2L) or your 24089 is current, then you may qualify for further course time reductions. Please contact us to discuss your options.

If you do not have your Class 2 learner’s licence you must register for the three-day course.

Please check the dates on your confirmation letter carefully as we do occasionally need to change the timetable to cater for public holidays and truck and trainer availability.

Please bring along your ID - We need to verify the identity of students in attendance, please bring ID with you on the day of training.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Stage 1 - 1 Day Class 2L Learners Licence Theory. Sit your licence test when you are ready. 
  • Stage 2 - 1 Day Logbook & Fatigue 24089, If you hold unit standard 24089, it is current and you can provide evidence, you will not be required to attend on this day.
  • Stage 3 - 1 Day Class 2 Licence theory for unit standard 17574.

Prerequisites:

  • 18 years of age or over
  • Held a full NZ car licence for at least six months
  • Driver’s Medical certificate

Important Note for Holders of Current Class 2, 4, or 5 Licences:

If you currently hold a Class 2, 4, or 5 licence and need to drive without a supervisor during training, you are required to apply for an exemption. This process involves completing a DL4B form, which can be found here on the NZTA website. The exemption allows you to meet legal requirements for training without being accompanied by a supervisor.

Entry Criteria:

All students are required to have a level of written and oral English equivalent to NCEA level 1 (year 11) or IELTS 5.5 or higher, to be eligible to attend our courses. The person responsible for making bookings or authorising attendance on the course must agree to these Terms and Conditions prior to acceptance of their student(s) onto the course. Where a student does not meet our English language requirement a reader/writer must be supplied by the student or the person responsible for authorising the student’s attendance. The reader/writer cannot be another student attending the same course.

    • How long does it take to get a Class 2 licence in NZ?

      If you don’t already have your Class 2 learner’s licence, our 3-day training will get you fully prepared. If you already hold your Class 2 learner’s licence, you can complete the training in 2 days.
    • What does the Class 2 truck licence course include?

      No, you do not need to have a Class 2 learner's licence before enrolling. The first day of the 3-day course includes training to help you obtain your Class 2 learner's licence. Once you complete this day, you’ll be eligible to sit your learner’s licence test. The remaining two days focus on further training and practical assessments.
    • Can I attend the 3-day course if I already have unit standard 24089 (Fatigue Management & Logbook)?

      If you already hold unit standard 24089 and it’s current, you may be exempt from the second day of training. Please provide evidence of your certification when booking to discuss potential time reductions.
    • What vehicles can I drive with a Class 2 Licence? 

      A Class 2 licence allows you to drive vehicles up to 18,000 kg GVM or vehicles with two axles. This includes medium-sized trucks, delivery vehicles, and some specialist vehicles.
    • Do I need a medical certificate to enrol in the (3-day) course? 

      Yes, you will need to provide a current medical certificate from an approved provider when enrolling in the course.

      Yes! Safety’n Action is an NZTA-approved training provider, ensuring that your training and qualification meet New Zealand's highest standards for truck driver education.
    • Where can I take Class 2 truck driver training?

      Safety’n Action offers nationwide training for the Class 2 truck licence. You can attend one of our training centres, or if you have a group, we can bring the training to your workplace.
