This course will provide you with the skills and knowledge, as an entrant or observer, to identify the types of confined spaces and hazards and risks associated with working in a confined space. It will also cover the atmospheric testing and equipment required to establish a planned and safe entry, as well as the correct emergency procedures in the event of a rescue.

In accordance with the requirements to maintain Consent to Assess for the unit standards taught on this course, Safety ‘n Action had this course pre moderated and approved by our standard setting body, The Skills Organisation.

If you use a harness while working in a confined space, we highly recommended you are appropriately trained in using a harness. Please book onto a harness safety or height safety introduction course to gain the unit standard 23229 Use a safety harness for personal fall prevention when working at height.

Students need to have 3 months of work experience in the industry prior to doing the course.

Please bring along your ID - We need to verify the identity of students in attendance, please bring ID with you on the day of training.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  1. Identify hazards and controls within confined spaces
  2. Develop an emergency procedure plan for a confined space
  3. Complete required documentation for a confined space entry
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of confined spaces and their permit notification and implementation requirements
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of monitoring and confined space testing requirements
  6. Describe the responsibilities and duties of people entering; or conducting observation duties for a confined space
  7. Demonstrate knowledge of atmospheric testing in potentially hazardous environments
  8. Conduct atmospheric tests and interpret and respond to atmospheric testing results

Entry Criteria:

  1. All students are required to have a level of written and oral English equivalent to NCEA level 1 (year 11) or IELTS 5.5 or higher, to be eligible to attend our courses. The person responsible for making bookings or authorising attendance on the course must agree to these Terms and Conditions prior to acceptance of their student(s) onto the course. Where a student does not meet our English language requirement a reader/writer must be supplied by the student or the person responsible for authorising the student’s attendance. The reader/writer cannot be another student attending the same course.
