Delivered by webinar and accessible from anywhere in New Zealand, this course is for those responsible for the management, storage, use, disposal and handling of hazardous substances in a workplace.

Develop your knowledge of workplace hazardous substances. Learn to understand safe storage and handling, how to identify, select and apply legislated and other controls designed to minimise the exposure of workers to these risks, and ensure your workplace is properly reporting as required under the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017.

The ideal attendees for this course are those responsible for the management, storage, use, disposal and handling of hazardous substances on a workplace. This would apply to store persons, team leaders, supervisors, shift managers, safety officers, purchasing officers and other managers responsible for the PCBU Hazardous Substances controls.

In accordance with the requirements to maintain Consent to Assess for the unit standards taught on this course, Safety ‘n Action had this course pre moderated and approved by our standard setting body, The Skills Organisation.

Students need to have 3 months of work experience in the industry prior to doing the course.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of classifying hazardous substances

  2. Demonstrate knowledge of procedures relating to the uncontrolled release of hazardous substances

  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the technical vocabulary and documentation used for hazardous substances

  4. Understand the potential adverse effects of hazardous substances on the body and environment, types of exposure monitoring, and treatment options

  5. Know the precautions to take relating to the storage and handling of hazardous substances in the workplace
  6. Understand responsibilities relating to the safe storage, handling, and disposal controls compliant to the legislation and workplace requirements

Entry Criteria:

  1. All students are required to have a level of written and oral English equivalent to NCEA level 1 (year 11) or IELTS 5.5 or higher, to be eligible to attend our courses. The person responsible for making bookings or authorising attendance on the course must agree to these Terms and Conditions prior to acceptance of their student(s) onto the course. Where a student does not meet our English language requirement a reader/writer must be supplied by the student or the person responsible for authorising the student’s attendance. The reader/writer cannot be another student attending the same course.
